This summer, I wanted to experience Japan differently. Instead of staying in hotels or taking trains, I rented a campervan from Roam & RollĀ Campervan Japan and hit the road around Tokyo with a mission in mind: to wish for love and romance!

šĀ Starting from Tokyo ā Easy Pickup & Smooth Ride
We picked up our campervan in Tokyo. The campervan was compact, easy to drive, and came with everything we needed: a comfy bed, outdoor chairs and table, indoor table, and curtains for privacy. For summer weather, the van also has fan and insect net for ventilation. The staff even helped us with GPS and gave tips on getting out of the city smoothly.

šĀ Fireworks Night in Yukata ā Tokyo Romance
On the first night, we headed to the famous Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival. The streets were packed with locals in colorful yukataĀ (summer kimonos), creating a magical atmosphere. I rented my yukata from Asakusa Rental Kimono Koto, just a few minutes from Sensoji Temple. I chose a soft pink pattern with a sky-blue obi beltāperfect for the romantic vibe.
We parked the van in a pre-booked overnight parking near Asakusa Station and walked to the river. Warm air, gentle breeze, and fireworks lighting up the skyāit felt like a scene from a Japanese summer movie.āØ
šĀ Praying for Love at Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine
The next day, we drove to Kawagoe, a charming small town just under an hour from Tokyo, often called āLittle Edoā for its old-town atmosphere.
At the famous Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, we took part in some traditional love rituals:
Walked through the Ema Tunnelāa path filled with hanging wooden plaques where people write wishes for love.
Tried the unique āLove Fish Omikujiā (Tai Mikuji)āyou fish your fortune slip out of a wooden pond using a toy rod. Mine said, āLove will come when you least expect it.āĀ š
Bought matching love charmsālocals say they work best when you and your partner carry them together.

š½Ā Recommended Eats in Kawagoe
After exploring the shrine and old streets, we stopped for some delicious local treats:
Koedo Osatsuan
Famous for its fried sweet potato sticks with vanilla soft-serveācrunchy, sweet, and the perfect summer snack.
Torocco Cafe
A cozy Japanese-style cafƩ with beautiful interiors. Their summer drinks like peach soda and matcha cream soda are refreshing and Instagram-worthy.
Unagi Komatsu
Craving something hearty? Their grilled eel rice bowls are fantastic, fresh, and reasonably priced.

šĀ Overnight Stay at a Riverside Rest Area
That night, we drove just a bit outside the town and stayed at Michi-no-Eki Kawagoe, a roadside rest stop that allows overnight camper stays. The atmosphere was peaceful, with only the sound of crickets in the background. We left the windows open and enjoyed the natural breezeāno AC needed!

šøĀ Final Thoughts: A Summer to Remember
This Japan campervan trip was everything I hoped for and more. From wearing a yukata under the fireworks, pulling a love fortune with a pink fish, to cooking simple meals by the van under the starsāit all felt magical.
If you're looking for a Japan summer road trip that's romantic, flexible, and full of charm, I highly recommend Roam & Roll Campervan Japan. The team was friendly, based in Tokyo, and the campervan had everything we needed to live freely on the road.
