How to Chase Autumn Colours Across Japan by Campervan - Part 2

In the first article, we looked at the feeling of autumn inside a campervan: cool mornings, warm bedding and the freedom to wake near the landscape. The next question is practical: how do you find the best colour during a trip that may cross several regions?

This is the joy of an autumn campervan road trip in Japan. You are not waiting for autumn to arrive in one place. You are following it. A campervan makes that possible because colour generally moves from colder regions and higher mountains towards lower elevations and warmer cities. When you are ready to turn this strategy into a route, continue to Blog 3: A 7-Day Autumn Campervan Itinerary in Japan.

How Japan’s autumn colours move

Temperature, rainfall, elevation and local conditions all affect the timing. As a broad rule, northern Japan and high mountains change first; lower countryside and cities follow later. That gives you three simple choices:

  • Go north or higher in early autumn.

  • Explore mountains and countryside near Tokyo in mid-autumn.

  • Move lower and south, toward Osaka, later in the season.

This is not a guarantee of peak foliage. It is a way to give yourself more chances of finding beautiful scenery. JNTO’s autumn information explains the wider seasonal pattern.

Start north or higher in early autumn

In September and early October, look towards Nikko, Nagano, Gunma or Fukushima from Tokyo. You may leave the capital in warm weather and arrive in the mountains to find cool air, misty forests and the first changing leaves.

Travellers with more time can consider exploring northern Tohoku or Hokkaido in a campervan, but these routes need longer driving days and more careful planning. For a shorter Tokyo-based holiday, elevation is often the simpler way to find an earlier autumn feeling.

Move south and downhill in late autumn

By late October and November, consider Yamanashi, the Fuji Five Lakes, Hakone, lower-elevation areas around Tokyo, or warmer destinations farther south. City parks, temple gardens and lakeside walks can remain colourful after high mountain roads have lost their leaves.

Do not assume that a route that worked in early October will work in late November. Snow, ice, fog and seasonal closures may affect mountain roads. Check official information shortly before driving.

Use forecasts as a flexible guide

An autumn foliage forecast can help you choose a region, but a forecast published months ahead cannot describe every valley on a particular day. Build a flexible plan instead:

  • Choose one main destination.

  • Keep two nearby alternatives.

  • Check local foliage, weather and road updates each morning.

  • Leave a spare day if seeing colour is the main purpose of the trip.

The best route may be the one that changes after breakfast.

Let the weather change the route

Mountain weather can be very different from Tokyo’s. Rain, strong wind, fog or early snow can affect visibility and access. Check both the local forecast and road conditions before setting off. The Japan Meteorological Agency warnings page covers weather hazards, while the MLIT road information system provides traffic restrictions, road-weather information and cameras.

Mountain roads need extra planning

Scenic roads such as the Venus Line, Nikko’s Irohazaka and Bandai-Azuma Skyline can be highlights of an autumn drive. They can also be affected by snow, storms, seasonal closures and vehicle restrictions.

Before driving, confirm:

  • opening dates and current restrictions;

  • weather, snow and road-surface conditions;

  • winter-tyre requirements;

  • parking availability;

  • attraction opening hours; and

  • whether the route suits your campervan.

A beautiful road is only useful if it is open and safe for your vehicle.

Three simple planning windows

September: go north of Tokyo or head higher elevation. Focus on cooler air, mountain scenery and the first strong colours.

October to early November: combine mountain roads with lakes, hot springs and countryside near Tokyo. Keep several possible campervan stops rather than one fixed viewpoint.

November to early December: move lower and south of Tokyo. Look for lakeside areas, gardens, temples and city parks as the high-country season fades.

Continue your autumn campervan road trip

Chasing autumn colours is not about finding one perfect date. It is about giving yourself enough freedom to move with the weather, elevation and changing leaves.
